Wonderful. Except I think women are used in sculpture and art to symbolize wisdom, victory, justice, love, whatever, but not really employed enough in positions of leadership, I think.

Zsolt, actually, New Zealand has quite a few women in power, luckily. Currently our PM and the Speaker are women, and we have a fair few ministers. In 1999, we had the PM, the Governor General (Representative of Queen Liz), Attorney General, and a few ministers, that I can recall; possibly the head of Telecom, and maybe a few mayors. I kept a magazine cover of seven powerful women in NZ at that time, but I think I lost it… Darned!
But apparently the statistics aren’t that great in the business world.

This time around, it sounds a little crzy, but Autumn is a season I wanna see and observe the little changes day by day. And it’s really true that it is soo soooo beautiful and romantic, with such colours in front of my eyes..:D))
Selena and Jazzy,
Looking at this building, I see only the finer details. Zsolt explained that it is a ‘weaving’ association and it’s a very special grey on this building so together with the still verdant green leaves, it seems so refreshingly good:)
It is much colder in the noon times when the wind blows…though the day fluctuates between 10-8 deg C I think…it seems fine for the current moment…Thank you so much for that caring note;)

Zsolt,
As I was going through several DP blogs I saw your repeated questions wanting a more detailed understanding of exactly what Waferboard is. Since the post was days ago and I don’t know if you’ll go back there, I thought I would answer here. It must look strange to someone who has never seen it before! It is made of wood chips (pieces of wood) glued to together. Once the house is completely built, it will not be seen (inside or out). It is like a foundation for the walls. Insulation, wiring, etc will be placed on it and then the inside of the house will be covered with Wallboard

i like this kind of picture, a kind of drawing from the kids’ mind. and really an important topic for us to think of…also Lisi (http://www.HongKongdailyphoto.com from Hong Kong also posted one view about the homeless people on the street.
I think that is a phenomenon all over the world, I could see them here too. Sad view, but serious problems for the whole society, for all of us to think of the way to solve the problems, to educate them as Denten said, to help them as Zsolt said… which are the best ways to solve it?? i hope the with the time is going by, the less homeless people we will see.

I don’t know the story, but I love the lamppost to the left of the basilica in the long shot! Beautiful. So delicate.
Meg said,
The display of the art itself is well-thought-out. Lisi had a man on the street, as well. Come to think of it, I think we do have homeless people in Nelson, but so far I haven’t seen one. In Auckland, I remember, the bookshop Borders used to stay open until very late, (not sure if it still does) and from about 7 or 8pm onwards, the homeless people congregated around the art books section; I didn’t know what to think because on the one hand one could not really get around them to look at the books (they don’t make way for you, either) but on the other, clearly, they were going to get thrown out when the shop closed, so these few hours were their moment of relative peace.
So I didn’t buy much, which might have been a good thing for our Visa balance anyway.
Meg said,
So clean! I hope you got some of the folk art booths, too.

in Chinese, I don’t know if there’s a similar one but I think it means a person is indecisive or changing his views constantly?

Its a beautiful photograph, as for the proverb nothing comes to mind immediately, but I’ll give it a thought. A brilliant idea anyway!

Great hug for you zsolt

I am thinking for the meaning of thie proverb for a long time. Does it mean the person cant make his decision ?? or he is easy to change his mind??
mm…maybe here is one in Chinese
墙头草,两边倒 (in pinying: qiang2 tou2 cao3,liang3 bian1 dao3). It describes people who do not have his desicion, he would follow the trend, not his mind. In Chinese, it is the derogratory term.
the meaning is different, but similar???
(in literally: qiang2= wall, qiang2 tou2=the top of the wall, cao3= grass; liang3=both, liang3 bian1=both sides, dao3=fall.) oh, hope all i explained you could understand….

You have a beautiful yard.
I think your proverb means to “keep an open mind”. Don’t focus only on A, but also consider B.
Zannnie said,
Singapore don’t really have many great men who came up with deep thinking proverbs.
I’m not exactly sure if this is close enough, but I kind of like this one:)
”He who can take no interest in what is small, will take false interest in what is great.”
photowannabe said,
I can’t think of a proverb, but maybe it means that there are always 2 sides to a story.
Fun contest.
Also could you tell Jing that I can’t comment on her blog either in either format.
photowannabe said,
Oops, I forgot to say that your backyard picture was nice with the spot of color from the tree. I like the foggy background too.
Nathalie said,
Mimmu today also posts a view of her city with a link to a previous shot taken this summer. I positively love these before/after shots. Yours manage to be beautiful in both cases, as always (although I liked the rose one so much!!!!).
Now for the meaning of the proverb, I suggest it means ‘he who starts something should carry through the logic of what he started’. Is that correct ????
Zsolt said,
thank you all for your comments and for the wonderful proverbs. I am glad that I could find out something you like:)
I guess the meaning of this proverb is something like: if you start something…better to finish it.
But its just one possible interpretation.
Ok…I can see its hard to find a proverb which has the same/similar meaning. But since my goal is to collect as many proverbs as possible from very different cultures pls feel free to share with me your country’s most popular proverbs.:)
Jing…today i learned from you something again about Chinese:) The character 头 (tou2) means originally HAIR…but here it means TOP. So its like the HAIR of the WALL is the same as the TOP of the WALL. Its wise and funny at the same time:)
Thank you again for all the nice comments:)

Your YouTube video is great. Your photo is special.
Ting said,
I totally agree with Kris said that put words into action. There aren’t many homeless people in Beijing, China, although there are still so many poor people in China who are living in the shed. While I was in CPT, South Africa, I saw so many poor homeless people who were living on the streets with only one thin blanket to cover themselves in cold nights, especially the children (the baby looking ones) among them, which really upsets me. It is important to make everyone to aware of it, and it is amazing idea to start with educating our children.
Ting said,
Seriously, this market is exactly what we need in Beijing. It is clean and tidy, with good quality of fruits、meats、vegetables and groceries. If we had this kind of “luxuary” in Beijing, I don’t ever need to go to three different places to do my weekly shopping on Saturdays, and it would save me so much of time.

Nice picture and the horse really looks “handsome”…
I’d like to experience the coach as well some day…
Ting said,
I just had a thought about your daily proverb…
I don’t know much about horses, but I was told that one of the ways to find out the age of the horses is by looking at its mouth. I am not sure how it works, but I believe that the teeth of horses are the key elements to tell the horses’ age. Anyway back to your proverb, if someone gives me a horse as a gift, and I go check its age straight away, it will be impolite, therefore, I guess that the proverb means:”be grateful for any horse (no matter if it is old or young) we are given, as we are not paying for it.” (something like that).
I’ve got a simple phase to share with you:”where there is an oppression, where there is a resistance.” I learnt this from college. I always keep it in mind, becasue I think it is a good one.

I will write about the Santa tradition more on my Chaoren site soon so Ting and everyone who is interested can read about it.
I am very happy with the proverbs “under my belt” (again a new expression I learned Kris):)…and
I decided that some later I will continue to collect them. Just step by step:) We suffered a lot with the layout because I wanted to insert Jing’s great characters in any case..but with Denton’s help we could manage it. Thank you Denton..now the proverbs are so beautiful with the Chinese characters.
Jing..I will add your new proverb to the list..and pls pls collect more of them to me..and when I start again my collection pls do not hesitate to send them.:)
I wish you all a wonderful day..now I run to have my lecture.

I like very much these high colours on houses, like in Scandinavian countries! This one is a pleasure to the eyes. In Brittany, most of the houses are white and dark blue (because of the slates on the roof), a bit sad when winter is so gray itself. But in our islands like Belle_Ile or Groix, people are encouraged to choose blue, yellow, pink for theirs walls and the result is great! And why Charlotte? Is it the owner’s name?
Ruth said,
I picture colors like this in warmer climates, such as Mexico and the Mediterranean. A nice surprise in Budapest. The roof is great too.

There is a theory that Anonymus was a well known bishop who published his writings under this “name”. If its so anonymus was a man. But of course is possible it was a woman and it would have been more interesting:) In the XIIth Century most likely women couldnt get into a position like this…but who knows. Maybe she was named anonymus to cover the fact she was a female.
It was not me who put the flowers there:) I found it there when I took the photo…someone probably felt to give this gift to him (her).

I have been away on summer vacation for two weeks and are now catching up. When I saw this shot I immediately looked in my photo album and found basically the same picture I took when I visited Budapest in 2000. On my shot however, the bunch of flowers are missing – suppose it was put there for a special occasion. I remember that the park in which the statue is situated is beautiful and as we visited it on a Sunday morning, we went to a little chapel nearby where we listened to a performance by a local organist. After that we went to the nearby Gundel restourant for crepes and coffee. Thank you for refreshing my memories and taking me back on memory lane. Hope to visit your beautiful city again in my life.
Zannnie said,
Ohh, it was very lovely and delicious ‘Bundáskenyér’ brunch (BReakfast-lUNCH);) heh heh, I still dunno how to pronounced the name yet:)
Verdict: 8/10
Maybe i had overrated it, but somehow the Hungarian ‘Jamie Olivier’ (a.k.a Zsolt) made it tasted ”very Hungarian” to me; Eating it together with fresh tomatoes sprinkled lightly with salt makes it taste very special ;) you all must try it!
Susan in Atlanta said,
I thought it was a real person when I first saw it! Such unusual statues. I am wondering how they can stay stable with only the little feet as a base for all the rest of bronze? Seems like a strong wind would do them damage. Yet, there they still stand for 20 years.

Gerald said,
Ah so gald you manage to emulate Lisi and Edwin’s bauble shots. My attempt was pretty miserable but I was using my second-best camera in poor light and indoors. Lisi said I needed to use natural light and no flash. I notice this one is outside. I took my best camera down town today but there isn’t a big tree with baubles outside to attempt the shot with.
All the best from Hyde.

Why do I like this simple picture of an overlarge clog?
It is artistic.

Looks like an anti terrorist blockade to stop car bombs.
photowannabe said,
I was thinking the same as Jim. The poles are so evenly spaced and look like they surround a park or perhaps the yard in front of the city hall building.
Its a nice bright shot.
lavenderlady said,
Well, gosh, I wouldn’t even have gone there until I read Jim and photo’s comments, but they are dead on. At first I’m trying to think what were they protecting…the plants? Not likely. Geeeze

Traffic is bad here as well, but because there is zero public transportation everyone must have a car.
Denton said,
Very funny. Especially the part about driving the area several round … We had two cars for year. One for my wife and one for me. About six months ago we gave one of the cars up and I thought the impact would be intolerable. Today I hate the idea of going back to a two car family. I love my walk to work. — lot Zsolt rounds frowns — too cool.
Michael said,
I just saw Al Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, and now I feel even more guilty about taking a car. Maybe not enough parking spaces is a way to encourage people to walk or take public transportation. Good choice of photos!

great photo today and I LOVED the photo of the big shoe from a few days ago.
Nathalie said,
My relatives have the same problem in Paris, Zannie, and I go through this when I visit them. Don’t understand how they can cope! I am lucky that I live in a suburb where parking space is plentiful… lucky me!

parking is getting into a big problem in singapore too. zannnie can tell u. we take public transport.
photowannabe said,
I agree lack of parking space is really annoying. I know, some will say take public transportation but where I live I need my car.
ben said,
Growing population of Nelson, we may have soon same issue.
ben said,
Wrong key and caps lock, That annoying! Sorry about previous comment, is there any away to delete it?
Now, start over…
We have growing population in Nelson region, and soon those parking issue will be a problem. Our public transportation does not feasible to be increase… We have only few bus service.
Kim said,
We feel your pain! After living in San Francisco we learned a vehicle was not necessarily an asset. Would you believe we used to plan money into our yearly budget for parking tickets from street sweeping days when we would forget to move the car (no garages to be had). We’ve been a one vehicle couple ever since and ride our bikes and use the public transit whenever possible, especially if heading downtown. Great photo to illustrate the situation.

Dsole said,
oh yes… that’s annoying… and it happens here too, long walks to get back to your car!
Sally said,
Oh, the space we devote to the car! We build little houses for them to live in, and huge ribbons of concrete for them to drive on, and tollways and computers and cop cars to police them….and on and on and on!
Helen said,
That does not happen so much here in Albuquerque. It used to happen all the time in New York. My parking space was about 6 blocks from the building I lived in! Part of the reason I headed for a smaller city!
Olivier said,
je trouve que c’est une bonne idee, de faire des patinoires dans des parcs où des cours en hiver. cela donne de bonnes photos a faire ;o)

Hi
I really enjoy your site and photos.
We totally identify with the “finally it snowed” thing here in the US in most parts too. THere has been virtually no snow or rain (depending on where you live) hardly at all. Very strange. Global warming??

Now in Delta, parking is not an issue at all, and being without a car would mean buying a horse! A horse in the city, now that would be a problem :)
