Its moments like these that I wish Hungary still had a monachy like Canada does. We still have a Queen but the elected government rules the country. When I think of Hungary I think of a very royal country. I see alot of things that remind me of the Austria – Hungarian Monarchy there even today. I think it would help the country to be quite honest, it would bring it together. I am not quite sure though, I believe that Trianon might get in the way of bringing back the Hungarian Kingdom.
The men’s costumes of the midle ages and the fascination with the crown currently in Hungary unfortunately reminds me of the early 1940-ies during World War II when I was in elementary school and Trianon was an obsession and fury during the war. We were endlessly drawing maps of the Great Hungary, trice as large in the past as at the present.
During the Russian occupation Hungarians were yearning to be part of the western European community and now that they are, they seem to be disillusioned?
What happened to the contentment that was evident during the Kadar years?
Julie – at times I think Hungary has to decide if we live in the XIXth or in the XXIst Century. These celebrations are cute, even touching at times but maybe too much related to recent politics.
