We do not really celebrate Halloween in Hungary. To be honest I am even not familiar with its origin. Maybe beause many expats live in this area is merchanter sells these figures in the Budagyöngye mall.
Nicely carved “jack-o-lanterns” – I bet they sold a lot of pumpkins!
I just thought I would mention the origins of Halloween since you were curious. I will try not to make it difficult to understand. The modern day Halloween tradition comes from an old Irish (celtic) festival called Samhain. People believed that on this day, the border between the living and dead was thin. They believed this allowed the spirits of the dead to pass through it . The wearing of masks and costumes is thought to be a result of the belief that they would scare off evil spirits.
I forgot to mention Zsolt. The figures you speak of, we call them Jack O’lanterns in North America. You can see the Irish roots of the halloween in the name.
