These iron shoes are on the Danube Promenade right at the Parliament Building. It is a memorial to the Budapest Jews who fell victim to the Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest and depicts their shoes left behind on the bank when they fell into the river after having been shot during World War II.
Makes you think doesn’t it. The world can be a horrible place. Strong photo.
It is so touching! It is good that the memory of such things is in mind of people – there is the hope that it won’t happen again!
Those looks very realistic. If I didn’t read the commentary, it looked strange. But after that, it appeals differently.
Impressive…
A very moving tribute!
Wow and WOW !! Great idea and site… Tomorrow we march to the shoes, we did as last year and before. So sad that it is eerier each year, seeing just how quickly and closely things are becoming as the French say, Plus ca change, …plus cette le memme chose! The more it changes, the More it is the same thing!
What a moving tribute the city made to these poor souls who perished. So sad, so tragic and a lovely photo by you.
This is an amazing photo. I truly believe that events such as these should never be forgotten and this is a powerful reminder. Well done.
It is a interesting picture.
What a very unique, ingenious and touching memorial. Horrible event and I always hope that it never happens again. Except that, it still does :(
great idea, great photo…
This is a very moving photo and i remember visiting the synagogue in Budapest when i visited a few years ago.
Every time I think of this statue I remember the story of a Hungarian man. As a kid he was pushed into the river by a lady before the others were shot. He swam and climbed out further down the river.
