A paternoster or paternoster lift is a passenger elevator which consists of a chain of open compartments (each usually designed for two persons) that move slowly in a loop up and down inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at any floor they like.
The photo was taken in the building of the Hungarian Railways Company (MÁV). You can see a video about the working paternoster here.

Hi Zsolt! I’m profiting from the holiday to anticipate the weekly visit… ;)
Amazing this paternoster; I remember seeing one some long time ago, but don’t think there is any one left here in Lisbon… Not too eco in energy consumption terms, I think… The Buda street lift is a nice shot!
Bud Spencer looks great, much better than the House of terror… ;))
The blue sky at the Franciscan church is gorgeous!
Thanks for your comment on Blogtrotter, which is still around the imperial town of Marrakesh. Hope you enjoy and have a great weekend!
Paternoster means “Our father” (the first two words of the Lord’s Prayer in Latin). This elevator is called Paternoster, because it works similar as the catholics use the rosary bead during the reciting of the Lord’s Prayer. I use every day in my workplace, but I hate it.
