August 1, 2007 - Theme Day : August 2007 ”Typical Hungarian Breakfast”

“Typical breakfast”- not just the food you eat personally, but it could be in a restaurant or grocery store, the “occasion” of breakfast (the people eating it, an interesting location where people eat breakfast) - ie think creatively about it.

Breakfast

It was good that this Theme day is about the breakfast of your city and since I am here in Budapest, I learnt about the Hungarian’s Typical breakfast. First you see a glass of milk with some pastries. The rounded ones are called ”Csiga” (pronounced as ‘chi-ga’) which means SNAIL :) The only difference is the flavour and Zsolt always prefers the one on the right which is chocolate flavour.
Next which looked like a horseshoe, is called ”mákos patkó”. Inside are filled with poppy seeds (called ‘mák’ in Hungarian). Here in Hungary, poppy seeds are not forbidden
unlike some countries, it is used widely in several Hungarian cakes and dishes:)

Is POPPY seeds also FORBIDDEN in your city (country)? :)

One more day! And the surprise is coming!:)

Love everything with ‘mák’! My grandma used to make the best poppy seed cake in the world (well, almost ;-))

They look delicious and very similar to pastries in the US. I often order a bagle with poppy seeds sprinkled on the outside. Now while I know the drugs created from the poppy plant are not welcome in the US and are very devastating to anyone who uses them. I have never given the poppy seed a second thought … You have me pondering what I eat … If you Google “poppy seed bagel” there are 16,000 many of the first ones asking or answering the question “Can eating a poppy seed bagel cause you to fail a drug test”.

So the other csiga is cinnamon flavor? Poppy seeds are not forbidden here, they are used in pastries (e.g., muffins, cakes) and breads, especially bagels.

:) :) :)
ezért szoktam most már mindig a közepéről kezdeni :)
(régebben mindig a széléről kezdtem, de mire a közepére értem a gyerekek pont kiették a saját csigájuk közepét és kéték el az enyémet is, nekem meg mindig három széle is jutott)

It looks like some yummy pasteries in that shot. I didn’t know that poppy seeds are forbidden in some places. I guess I live a sheltered life.

Why are poppy seeds forbidden in some places? Is it because of an opium connection?

Anyway, my favourite pastry is a snail - I like the ones with sultanas in them. Definitely not chocolate (I cannot bear sweet things in the morning). When I’m in Europe and if there’s a lack of savoury things for breakfast, I’ll always opt for a snail if pastries are what’s on offer! (I have nothing against pastries from mid-morning on; just find it hard to do them first thing!)

Looks good. Never heard of poppy seeds being forbidden in France. This looks rather like a French breakfast actually.

It as been a very interesting morning looking at all the breakfasts, I have tea or coffee and toast.

Poppy seeds are available here, I like them sprinkled on top of homemade bread.

Zannie, I would like a bite of all three, please. Yum! I cook/bake with poppy seed all the time. In fact, here in the states one of the most popular breakfast muffins is a poppy seed muffin. Maybe our poppy seeds here are different from what you can get in Hungary.

Hey, a happy face made of pastries!

Poppy sees are not forbidden in California, in fact you see them on bagels and stuff, all the time, but they are said to give false positive on marijuana drug tests administered in the worforce (such as those given to government workers, for instance). Personally, the only problem I ever had with poppy seeds is that it tends to get stuck in the wrong places in your teeth and then you look silly.

Oh, they all look so very delicious! But I believe that chocolate one would be my favourite too! :)

I didn’t know of a poppy-seed ban. I don’t think there’s one here in Switzerland. Your snails look good, they remind me of cinnamon rolls in the US.
