”Cheers”

Ady's

I saw this with clues only ”Ady – 1877-1919”, then I found out later that he was a (1877-1919) Hungarian writer. Endre Ady is best-known for his love poems. In 1903, he published his first significant volume of poetry, Még egyszer. He wrote some 1,000 poems and published 10 volumes of poetry in 12 years.

Who is your favourite poet?:) or poems?

  1. I taught poetry, I read poetry, I LOVE poetry! My favorite poem, and I have many, is “A Blessing” by James Wright. Can’t resist: I need to add it to my comments:

    A Blessing

Just off the highway to Rochester, Minnesota,
Twilight bounds softly forth on the grass.
And the eyes of those two Indian ponies
    Darken with kindness.
They have come gladly out of the willows
To welcome my friend and me.
We step over the barbed wire into the pasture
Where they have been grazing all day, alone.
They ripple tensely, they can hardly contain their happiness
    That we have come.
They bow shyly as wet swans. They love each other.
There is no loneliness like theirs.
At home once more, they begin munching the young tufts of spring in the darkness.
I would like to hold the slenderer one in my arms,
For she has walked over to me
    And nuzzled my left hand.
    She is black and white,
Her mane falls wild on her forehead,
And the light breeze moves me to caress her long ear
That is delicate as the skin over a girl’s wrist.
    Suddenly I realize
That if I stepped out of my body I would break
    Into blossom.

    James Wright

  2. Je ne connais pas ce poète, je vais chercher pour voir si il est traduit en français. mon poète préfère, c’est Raymond Queneau, et son recueil “Cent Mille Milliards de Poèmes”. Je vous souhaite un bon weekend

I do not know this poet, I will seek to see whether he is translated into French. my poet prefers, it is Raymond Queneau, and his collection “A hundred and Thousand Billion Poems”. I wish you a good weekend

  3. Pablo Neruda… amazing.

I have seen from my window
the fiesta of sunset in the distant mountain tops.
    Sometimes a piece of sun
burned like a coin in my hand.

  4. For once, I actually have a favorite poem and poet. Usually I have a problem narrowing it down to just one. My favor poem is “Dulce et decorum est” by Wilfred Own. But I think my favorite poet (at least for right now), might just be Robert Browning–probably because he could condense a whole novel’s worth of plot into a long poem.

  5. Those are creepy eyes.

Now, Zannnie, who is YOUR favorite poet? What’s YOUR favorite poem? :D

  6. Reflecting back the only book of poetry I have every read from cover to cover was a collection written by former president Jimmy Carter … However the association of Endre Ady and Cheers lead me to Google for a poem or reference to a poem in the long running US TV sit-com called Cheers. What I found was an quote from the character Cliff Calvin in the 1988 episode called Bar Wars. Cliff is describing a poem he is about to recite said “It’s written in iambic pentathlon with rhyming couplets, every couple of couplets.” The joke of course is the phrase “every couple of couplets”.

  7. Josy:
My favourite poet is William Shakespeare, i like his writings but I dunno which is my favourite poem (yet) ;)

  8. I guess my favorite poet is Robert Frost.
The eyes of this poet reminds me of Pablo Picasso – maybe even Peter Lorre.

  9. What a picture! “Cheers” along with Ady… OMG, who could put that sign there?!?
Well, as being Hungarian, he is one of my favorite poets, not only his love poems but he had a great sense for social issues, spiritual subjects and history.
