Ludwig Museum

Jodeepics 232.jpgThe National Theater and Palace of Arts are part of the new Millennium City. This site is situated on the last large vacant parcel of riverfront land in Budapest. It is located on the Pest side of the river just south of Budapest’s big ring road, at the terminus of a regional commuter train and near the road to the airport.

Here you can see the Ludwig Museum as the Palace of Arts houses the Bartók National Concert Hall, the Ludwig Museum and the Festival Theater.

Budapest night

BEST of budapestdailyphoto.com

Actually its not totally night yet on the photo..just right after the twilight when the river becomes like a mirror and the lights started to be very bright. The yellow-green line over the bridge is the Tramway No 4 or 6. Since I wanted to make sure that the quality will be good the exposure time was like 30 sec. So the tramway became like a ghost:) A little speedy moment over the slow, silent river.

Memorial of the Old National Theatre

Jodeepics 049.jpg

So this is it, as the new National Theatre of Budapest was opened in 2002, this is the memorial for the old – a nice way to remember. We were near the Pest end of the Lágymányosi Bridge, between the Soroksári road and the Danube, and five-minute walk away you can see the Csepel HÉV and then next is The Ludwig Museum which is just beside it.

Sunset under the bridge

Budapest sunset

A couple of days ago I posted a sunset photo. Now here is a second picture from that series. A different angle, with wider view you can see not only the sunset itself but even its environment. Nice peaceful summer evening in Budapest.

Ohh, did it collapse?

Jodeepics 064.jpg

It didnt’ fell into the waters. It didn’t collapsed. It was the Memorial of the Old National Theatre and in this semi-submerged way it looked dramatic. This is one of the more interesting memorials. And on the photo posted two days ago, you can see the other fallen end with the bigger picture including the present Hungarian National Theatre.

I’ve always like water fountains, sea, water features or silhouettes of architectures etc against sunset. And now especially architectures that had included this water element. This one is very special and it has a calming atmosphere to it :)

I would like to show you the entire memorial in my next coming post.

Nora’s Budapest

2004 1st of May

For this week our special guest is Nora with a special photo. Her comment is:

Budapest had been waiting for the birth of my daughter with this ‘green carpet’ maybe.:)

Actually Nora took this photo on the 1st of May in 2004, the day when Hungary joined the European Union. And among others, with this strange idea we celebrated it with green grass on the Freedom Bridge for a day:) It was fun.

It marks the beginning of Summer to me with the nice blue sky and a warm sunshine weather today. It has longer days as the sun did not set til 9pm. I wanted to see the Memorial of the Old National Theatre very much cos I missed it when I was here in the last winter. I will post about it in days to come, hence do visit on alternate days as I will continue this co-authoring with Zsolt on this Budapest Daily Photo journey, sharing with you all my ‘discoveries’ ;)

Lomonosov

Tudományos Akadémia

Mr Lomonosov was the Russian chemist who created the “periodic table” in XIXth Century.

Update: Ups sorry…I just got an e-mail from Nóra that it was Mendeleyev who created the “periodic table”:) Mikhail Lomonosov was the rector of the University of St. Petersburg and founder of the Moscow State University which later got his name. Lomonosov stated the idea of conversation of mass.

His statue is on the building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

wikipedia says:

The Hungarian Academy of Sciences (in short: HAS, in Hungarian: Magyar Tudományos Akadémia) was founded in 1825, when Count István Széchenyi offered one year’s income of his estate for the purposes of a Learned Society at a district session of the Diet in Bratislava (seat of the Hungarian Parliament at the time), and his example was followed by other delegates. Its task was specified as the development of the Hungarian language and the study and propagation of the sciences and the arts in Hungarian. It received its current name in 1845. Its central building was inaugurated in 1865, in neo-Renaissance style.

It was a wonderful sunset over the Danube on Saturday evening. Some part of the sky turned into orange and that cross on the top of the church was the last that witnessed the setting of the Sun.

Simultaneous Kissing Guiness Record

Csókparty

More than 6,500 couples kissed simultaneously at 8.30pm Saturday in Budapest. The event was organized by a new magazin called BORS (Pepper) claiming to have set a new world record. I dont know the final datas yet but I guess the former record held by the Philippines had been broken by Hungary! The photo was taken like an hour before the event because during the action I was quite busy:)

UPDATE:

RECORD KISS: A couple kisses as part a successful bid by Hungarians to break the world record for simultaneous kissing as more than 6400 couples joined lips for a few seconds at a party outside the country’s parliament in Budapest.
Hungarians have broken the world record for simultaneous kissing when more than 6400 couples joined lips for a few seconds at a party outside the country’s parliament, the organisers said.

Hungary has been engaged in a kissing duel with the Philippines since 2004, when 5327 couples kissed in Manila, followed by new records in Budapest in 2005 and 6124 couples in Manila again this February.

“The news came a few months ago that Filipinos had overtaken us, we became defiant and said we would take it back again,” journalist Ferenc Pallagi who organised the Kissing Party, said.

One young couple who identified themselves as Orsi and Pityu started kissing during the rock concert half an hour before the official record attempt.

“That’s the least we can do for the nation,” Pityu said.

Pallagi said he was pleased the square in front of the ornate parliament building by the river of Danube was the scene of such peaceful emotions. The square had been cordoned off for months after being the scene of protests against the government.

“It is early summer. . .and how else could these young people express themselves than through their love and emotions,” he said before the couples in white baseball caps kissed and the concert resumed.

Rolls Royce at the University

Rolls Roys

I found this Rolls Royce in front of the University the other day when I went to examine my students. First, I thought they just didn’t inform me that they have increased the salaries…and the good news are waiting for me inside.:) But no good news like this…it was a conference and exhibition in our building about Palliative treatment and hospice. One of the participants had this car I guess.
