Psychiatric Instituion- Lipótmező

Lipótmező 0351

This is one of the last moments which I could take a photo of this building, showing it as the largest Psychiatric Institution of Hungary. It was established in 1868 as the first Asylum for people with mental health problems. Just like any other large institutions, it functioned as a huge “industry” officially until the 1st of April in 2007. They have decided to close it. However it was still open yesterday when I simply walked in and I took some photos saying good bye, hopefully to an era…and to an attitude also.

In a way I am glad that those large institutions for disabled or for people with mental health problems are going to be closed in Hungary. But on the other hand, I am afraid that there are still very few community based services for them, supporting the independent living for those who are probably a little more vulnerable in a way or other.

I guess the building will be an exclusive hotel in the future…but nobody knows about it yet. I will surely post about it!

  1. I do hope there will be other services for those with mental health problems. This old building has a lot of character. I hope it will be well used in the future.

this building, it is splendid. The color is really very beautiful, superb photograph

  3. Thank you for these pictures. My mother (now 67) grew up on these grounds (now lives in the U.S.) Her father worked as a nurse there. I showed her these pics and she had a nice stoll down memory lane. Looking forward to finding out what they do with this beautiful building.

  4. This looks like a beautiful building that has a facade that wouldn’t betray what would have happened inside. If it turns into a hotel I bet there are ghosts that would walk those corridors…
