Central Market – Vásárcsarnok

Best of www.budapestdailyphoto.com

Built by architect Samu Petz in 1897, this central market called ‘Központi Vásárcsarnok’ was restored in 1994 after a huge fire.

Here, you can find all kinds of fresh produce, meat, cheese, grocery, flowers and Hungarian specialities. The locals who live nearby buy food from here too. The mezzanine level houses folk-art booths and snack bars where we had ‘Lángos‘ – the traditional hungarian snack. But since the portion is so big, I am eating it like my ‘lunch’ ;) The original with sour cream, garlic and cheese:) This photos shows the basement level. Also it is where you can find fishmongers, pickles, a grocery store and a shop selling colonial produce.

In my next coming post, I shall show you the mezzanine level detailing, which I am very impressed with.

This is the address: IX. Vámház körút, 1-3

  1. Nice inviting colours! so many goods, its hard to decide what to buy!
once i tried to snap a shot, and was immediately stopped by a guard .. :p

  2. great choice Zannnie, hope the prices are ok. langos is on my mind since Kris posted it a few weeks back, looks so tasty.
    have a nice weekend.

  3. The market is both inviting and clean! The food and fruits are displayed in a very pleasing way! Wonderful broad view!

  4. Seriously, this market is exactly what we need in Beijing. It is clean and tidy, with good quality of fruits、meats、vegetables and groceries. If we had this kind of “luxuary” in Beijing, I don’t ever need to go to three different places to do my weekly shopping on Saturdays, and it would save me so much of time.

  5. kris,

perhaps you must come with us the next time;)

    Ting,
I hope they will build a new comprehensive market in Beijing for more convenience soon….

  6. I love langos, it’s a must-have every time I visit Hungary ! I also love strudel, which you can buy in the Central Market in every flavour you can imagine… My favourite is the cabbage strudel :-)
